Search Engine Optimization for The Small Business
This is for the people that are trying to get a grasp on basic Search Engine Optimization. Do you Know what it is? Do you know how important it is? SEO is the foundation to the web site you are building! Build your site on a week foundation and it Will crumble! Build it on a strong foundation and you will have a site that is Recognized and Found! This is the reason to have a web site in the first place...to be found by the search engines. If your site is on page 10, no one will ever find it! Here I will give some tips that I have learned on how to get your site recognized, and maybe even to show up on Page One!
This information will most likely get a lot of the "Gurus" of SEO mad, because they want you to pay them for this, but I have done it for Free, and so can you! Let me first say that I am not a Website Guru, or anything like that. I am a small business owner that out of necessity has managed to get his site on page one of Google for my key words, and that's out of over 188,000,000 to 48,000,000 (yes that's Millions)! I am also not only on page one for local searches, but my site is there several times on page one! So here is how "I" do it, as a business owner, not a SEO Guru, and it did not cost me anything but time.
Lets start at the beginning, (take notes!) the framework of your site. You must first have a plan, not a business plan or anything like that, but a "Really good" idea of what you want to get out of your web site. Write down what your prospective clients are looking for. This is really easy, just pretend You are a client looking for your product or service, what are you typing into the search engine? Write down the search terms, these will be Keys to getting your business "Found" on the major search engines. The words that you are typing into a search engine are the "Key Words" that get a website found. You will also want to have your text "Content" ready, make sure you include your Key Words in your content, don't go nut's here, just keep in mind that the more times your Key Words are used in your Content, the more relevant your site will be. You can also start to put any of your photos into a separate folder (just for building your site). Make sure your photos are optimized for the Web, it will help with how fast your site Opens! I use a Free program called "PIXresizer" it's fast and FREE!Your "Key Words", the thing you want your prospective clients to search for is CRITICAL! This is where to start, how will we find you, what will we (the consumer) look for, how will we search for your product or service. Once you have these "Key words", the rest is very methodical. As an example, lets say your Key Words are "Amazing Widgets", and your secondary Key Words are "Widgets that Sell", and your third alternative is "The best Widgets". First off, your Domain should reflect your Key Words if at all possible. Having your Key words in your domain is a Big plus, but not as critical as Key word content (I'll go over this later), so with these Key Words you would try to get a domain that is something like, www.widgets.com, or www. amazingwidgets.com, or www.widgetsthatsell.com. Get the idea! This is the first thing that search engines look for, it's what the Crawlers (the search engine robots) look for. But don't worry, even if your domain is something like www.whatever.com, there are ways to make the search engines find you and your product or service. This is one of the 'Strong Foundation" areas I believe I have had great success with my SEO. On your desktop create new folders, one for your photos, one for your page elements (boxes. lines, buttons, etc.) and one for your content (text). I have found that it is very helpful to your SEO to name these folders, Pictures, elements, text files, with Your Key Words. So if your main Key Words are "Amazing Widgets", then name your photo folder, "Amazing Widgets photos", name your page elements folder "Amazing Widgets page elements" and your text folder, "Amazing Widgets content". You will also want to rename any files within that folder with the same heading. So, every file in your "Amazing Widgets photos" folder will start with "Amazing Widgets-Widget1", "Amazing Widget-Widget2" and so on. The same applies to all files in all folders for your site. This may be somewhat controversial, as far as effectiveness, but it works for me, sooo...! You see every time you put Anything on your web site, and I mean anything, a dot, a line, a photo, a text block, it all has a trace back to where it came from. So if your site is Amazingwidgets.com and your photo has a trace to a folder called "Amazing Widgets photos" and a file name of "Amazing Widgets-Widget1" then you have just created a line of Key Words that give your site relevance. All web sites are "Judged" by their Relevance to the Search terms used. You are simply using Very Strong building blocks for the foundation of your site.OK, Time To Build (or re-build) your site! You can use any site building program that you are comfortable with. I use "Bluevoda" because, yes, the software is Free! The only draw back is I have to host my site with Bluevoda, ( 9.95/mo!), but I have to host it somewhere, and they have been an Excellent Host! Anywhere you decide to Host your site is fine, just keep in mind that hosting support is Amazingly important, so choose wisely! This is just a "Basic" site configuration and you will have to do some research on how to implement any special effects, forms, buttons, etc. based on the software you use. You will start your site with your "index" page, this is your Home page, or Landing page, and must be named "index" not "Home page". Your headline is Extremely Valuable with SEO, so use a great one. Using the example above, I would use "Amazing Widgets That Sell!" You can see that I used two of your Key Word phrases in the headline ("Amazing Widgets" and "Widgets That Sell") Are you starting to see the importance of your Key Words! Then add a photo or some text (content). Let's assume your adding a photo, there are several things to add to this "Photo" that with get you found by search engines. First off, Always use the "Alternate Text" feature that All elements offer. That means anything you import, that is a image, box, line, border, etc. has the "Alternate Text" feature. Typically you will right click on the object and a box will appear, click on "Properties" and then "Alternate Text" and add a description. This is where you will be able to add more relevance to your site by implementing Key Words. Don't get silly here, just put in something like " Our Amazing widgets are the Best selling Widgets around". Use a different description for each element that has an "Alternate Text" feature. You can add the "Alternate Text" to almost everything on your site, a box, a line, an image. Don't forget this, it is a vital part of SEO.So, now you have a Headline, a Photo and some content (text). This is the methodical part, Repeat this same process throughout your site. Every picture, every box, every imported item should have some sort of "SEO" implemented into it. This is all achieved by the basics of Folder Names, File names and utilizing the "Alternate Text" feature. It might sound like a lot, but after you get into the stream of things, it becomes as simple as signing your name on a letter. It's all about following the Search Engine Optimization rules of Engagement! Yes there is a lot more to SEO, but this will get you started on the right path to creating a web site that actually has Value and Relevance! After all, ALL search engines are about Value and Relevance. If you have no value, and no relevance (to the search) you don't exist! In my next article I will go over some more tips that can help to make your site is a "Relevant" site to the search engines, and push you even closer to Page One! Once again I have to say that I am not a "Web Guru" just a small business that has managed to not just Survive, but to Grow in this amazingly difficult economic environment. I have done all for Free (with the exception of web site hosting) and my web site is why I'm still growing my business, and not closing it!
Diversify your Marketing
In today's market Diversification in abilities and products can not only keep you alive, but help you to thrive! It is my belief that to stay stagnant, only focusing on "it has worked for me in the past" type of mentality will not only put you at the Bottom of the list, but most likely put you out of business. The businesses that are thriving are the ones that diversify not only their products but their abilities and services.
Take a look at what is happening in the Internet world of Marketing. The choices are unbelievably Diverse! Are you taking advantage of the amazing amount of FREE marketing available to Any business! All you need is an internet connection and time and you can push your business to the next level. Internet marketing is where it's at today! If your not online, if your not Tweeting, Facebooking, Linked up with Linkedin, Blogging, etc. well let's just say that you WILL be left in the dust by those that are.
Marketing on the internet is not hard and you don't have to be a computer Guru to do it. What you do need is time, and plenty of it. Don't have the time? Then hire someone to do it for you, it Will pay for itself ten-fold! At the very least you should be spending 30-60 minutes a day focusing on online marketing. Think it's expensive, Wrong! Most of it is Free! I have over 24 web sites and only pay for one, and all of the Free sites direct traffic back to my paid for site (what do you think This article/blog is for!).
Diversify your marketing plan to include all aspects of your business. As an example I'll use myself. I am a Iron worker fabricator that specializes in custom gates, entrance design and automation, a very brief description, but it works for this. I use sites like Linkedin and Merchant Circle for business to business marketing since I install and service gate operators that a lot of business use. I also install the gates and security devices for gates, so that is what I push there. Just these two site alone drive at least 500 new visitors per month to my site! I use Facebook and Twitter to keep my followers informed on what I'm working on, and on any new projects that might be coming up. You never know when one of your "Friends" or "Followers" might need, or know someone that needs your product or service. I also use Wordpress, Article Niche and Ezine Articles to drive even more traffic to my site. I'm also am a member of several other sites that allow me to post pictures and link back to my web site all for Free! Sound like a lot? It is, but here I am in 2012 thriving in a business the has a very tight Niche, not to mention I live and work in a town with a population of just over 4000.
It has been my internet marketing, article writing, forum discussions and pure Diversity that has kept me alive in a market that has seen Many a businesses go by the way side. And I'm no computer Guru, I just believe in the phrase "You move towards what you focus on" (Anthony Robbins), and I am focused on thriving, not just surviving!
Creating that Perfect Gated Entrance Design!
Where to start? The first thing to consider when coming up with a new entrance design is the location. If it is a new property you may have many options, although Convenience is one of the most important things to consider. You don’t want to have to make a “U-Turn” to get into your property, you also have to consider who/what will be coming through that entrance...guests, contractors, builders, cement trucks, semi trucks, all will need the Room to enter your property safely. For existing properties the choices can be limited, but that does not mean you have to have an ugly entrance.
You have the perfect location, now what? Unless you are a contractor or designer, it is best to let a professional do the design work for you. We have always been able to come up with exciting Entrance Designs to almost any property. Through careful planning, consultations and insight, a beautiful entrance can be designed for your property.
Another important consideration for your entrance is the distance from the “turn off” road. All counties will have a minimum “set back” requirement for any gates, fences, stone work, lighting, etc. Be sure to check with the local building department on what their required set backs are (typically the minimum set back is 35-40 feet from the center of the road). If you plan on having an Entry Gate and if it is at all possible, keep the entrance at least 70-80 feet from the turn-off road. This will allow for most vehicles to pull completely off the road while waiting for the Gate to open. Keep the “Flair”, (where your drive meets the turn-off road) as wide as possible. This will help to keep your guests/visitors from clipping your landscaping, stone work, lights, mail boxes, etc. as they turn into your property.
So now you have your location, your basic design/layout, it’s time to consider the Entry Gate. The Entry Gate should enhance your property while also serving it’s main purpose, Security. The Gate design is very important to the Feel of the entrance, and along with the Columns and Lighting should be incorporated into the Entrance Design. Your Entry Gate should be welcoming, interesting and the centerpiece of your entrance. Your Entrance can tie in with the surrounding landscape or it can stand out from the crowd! It is Very Important that you use a Professional Gate Builder/Installer for your gate. You want the best gate operators that you can afford. The last thing you want is to have to manually open your gate in the pouring rain, you will be soaked by the time you get it open! We use only top of the line gate operators and safety devices to try to eliminate down time and maintenance.
Landscaping is next. The plants you choose should all be “zoned” for your specific location. Are you going to have irrigation? If not it is vital that you choose plants that are hardy and native to your area. You can typically expect a 5%-10% loss of plants for a non-irrigated landscape (assuming there is not a drought), so plan on replacing a couple of plants. Use plenty of mulch, 4”-6” around the plants, this will help with retaining water.
Enjoy your Entrance! The above is a very compacted Entrance Design plan of attack, but will give you a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Are you Living to Dream, or Dreaming to Live?
So many people spend their lives wanting to “Live their Dream," and yet they do nothing to move toward that. Our lives are what we make of them. Sure we have some things that have gotten in the way, some things that have turned us down the wrong path, but these “Things” are just that, things. There really is nothing that makes us do what we do, that makes us think what we think, these are choices that we make in order to stay where we are comfortable, even if that comfortable place is not what you want. The truth is, it is what you want, or you would not be there! I know, you’re thinking, yeah right, I want this bad relationship, or this awful job, or horrible life, well... is someone making you stay in the bad relationship? Is someone making you work at that awful job? Is someone making you have that horrible life...YES someone is, and it’s You!
You are the only one that controls your life. You are the one that decides to stay in that bad relationship, keep that awful job, and to have a horrible life. These are all choices that you have made. You are also the only one that can change, that can make different choices, that can have what you really want. It is just as easy to make a good choice as it is to make a bad one. So why do people keep making bad choices? Habit! They are “Used to it," it’s what they have been doing all their life. But as we all know, we can change these habits, we can break the chains of bad decisions.
The choice to have a better life is an easy one. The decision to be happy, to live your dream, or to do the things you always wanted to do is very empowering! And it is a decision, a choice that you have to make, one way or another you are going to make that choice. So why not make the choice to be happy, to live your dreams and do the things you want to do. Make it a NEW habit to choose wisely, to be happier and to have the things you have always wanted. It is just a matter of Choice!
Sounds easy enough, right! It is as easy as you think it is, and it is as hard as you think it is. This is another choice, choose to make it easy and it will be. There are some things you need to do to live your dream, to have a happier life and to get the things you want. This is probably one of the most important things that you can do to achieve what you want. They are simple things, like writing down what you want, set goals for when you want them. Post this where you can read it every day, or even better, carry it with you so you can read it several times a day. It is also important that you BELIEVE what you have written. You must see yourself achieving these goals, believe that you can and you will!
This is just one step toward having a better life, but it is amazing how well it works! It works every time for everyone, no exceptions. Think about what you want, and you will have what you think about.

What is Positive Thinking?
You've heard it a hundred times if you've heard it once, "just think positive". What does that mean? How can you think positive when there are so many negative things happening. I'll tell you what I think.
Thinking positive is not just a thought process, it is a commitment to a different way of life, it is a process in which the way you think is the way you live. Think about your life, is it what you "thought" it would be? The truth is, it is exactly what you thought it would be. You see it is the way you think and feel about your self, your life, that directs you down the path that You choose. Nobody makes you do, or think, or act in a certain way, it is all YOU! So it is up to You to do something about it. What do you Do?
Think Positive! How? That's easy, it's a matter of Remembering the positive times in your life, like when you graduated High School, College, or when you got married, had a child, got your first bike, your first kiss, your first job. Remember how it felt, how it looked, how it smelled, How did You "Feel", I guarantee you, you felt Positive, Elated, Amazed, and Empowered. These feelings are the key to thinking and feeling Positive. They are your Brick and Mortar of the life you want to build. Your ability to remember those feelings when you are feeling down is a sure way to bring you back up!
Applying a "Positive Think" as I call it, to the decissions and choices you make throughout your day is how you can turn your life around. Your "Life" is what you think it is, if you think it sucks, then You are guaranteeing it sucks, but just the oppisite works also, if you think your life is Great, is Wonderful, is an opportunity around every corner, then it will be as you think it is. You see, it is what you think and feel that truely directs you to the life that you want.
What kind of life do you want? One that is dark and dreary, or one that is Bright and full of opportunity! It's your choice, no one can make it for you, you are in control of what you think. Think Positive and you will be positive.

Six Tips to Prosper During a Slowdown
If you run a small business, you know that the market, trends and business plans have changed drastically in the past two years. Small businesses are especially hard hit, so here are six things you can do help your business actually prosper during the current slow down.
1. Reduce overhead and operating expenses. Don't be afraid of change! Moving your business to a less costly building can greatly reduce your overhead costs. Get rid of any unnecessary services, ie. cable TV is not necessary at the office, that snack machine is eating away at your cash flow, bringing breakfast or lunch to work could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars a year, just changing the type of lighting you use can help reduce your electric bill. These little cuts add up fast, and will help take pressure off of you so you can spend more time on your Ideas and production.
2. Give your office/shop a fresh look. This will help create a sense of moving forward and not stagnating. It will also show your customers that you have pride in your business and make them feel more comfortable doing business with you. There are many inexpensive ways to spice up a office or shop, paint is one of the cheapest, window or wall dressing can really make a big difference, Potted plants will warm up any area, and keep it Clean!
3. Create your own Web Site or Blog. There are hundreds-thousands of sites that offer free web sites or blogs. Take advantage of all the Free forms of advertising that you can find! Most of the free sites make it very simple to create a web page, they can walk you through it and you can have a site or blog up in a matter of minutes! Some suggested sites are; Merchant Circle, LinkedIn, Face Book, Twitter, etc. The more your name is out there the easier it is for customers to find you.
4. Get involved in your community, become active in your local merchant associations, join your chamber of commerce, attend town meetings. These are all great places to Network! The more you are seen the more attention you will create for your business.
5. Take a good look at your abilities and products, and change to services and products that are popular Now! This is an ever-changing market and if you don't change with it, it will move right on without you!
6. Never Give Up! Be persistent, follow up, follow up, follow up every chance you get. Keep your eyes and ears open to what is going on around you, there are opportunities Everywhere! How to attract prospects to your property
You've decided to develop a property, you have the land, you've platted the property, acquired the proper permits, now what. Well, in order to sell your property, you will need to create interest in that property. One of the best ways to do that is to have an entrance to the property that makes your future clients "want" to live there!
The entrance should be exciting, warm and welcoming. Your future clients will want a sense of security, with out feeling caged in. The hardscapes and landscapes should compliment and "Fit in" to the surrounding areas. You can also create interest by installing a custom gate that reflects the feeling of the community, beautiful stone work, bright and colorful landscaping that "Shows off" year round, hardscapes and/or water features that tie the property into the natural surroundings, these are the kind of attributes that get properties not only noticed but "Sold"!
People more and more are looking for Security. There are many properties that offer a "Gated Community", so there are many to choose from. By having an Inviting, beautiful entrance you not only increase the property value, but you increase traffic and interest to Your property. You want your prospective buyers to feel secure in there new home, but not locked in. By having beautiful hardscapes, attractive lighting, interesting landscaping and not to mention a custom gate that enhances the property without giving off that "Keep Out" feeling.
Remember most of all you are trying to sell your property, satisfy your clients and create an atmosphere of "Welcome Home!".
